Romans 8: 1-2 NIV Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Our struggles are real and a majority of them lurk right where we have complete access.  The mind is powerful and can easily allow us to shape our very existence.  As we rise in the morning, it goes to work speaking words, creating thoughts, and analyzing decisions.  Day puts them into action and the night lies along side unpacking.

The most intense thoughts are the ones that start as gentle whispers.  Lightly tickling the ear, seemingly angelic.  Consciously allowing a sense of realism to the day.  If a mood swings far right or left, the whispers have a way of stabilizing the motion.  Providing necessary caution, options for plan B, and offering up possible pit-falls.

Romans 8: 3- 8

For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

As we allow these whispers to help direct our paths, their power becomes necessary. Unbearably dark and confusing if we ignore their call.

In days of spirit led euphoria, a suppression occurs.  Where did the voice go?  God’s voice seems to boom in a way that creates a thunder of emotion surging through our veins.  No question He is in charge.  But, this too passes.  Left back down to the world and human weakness prevails.

Needing this Godly connection, we turn over every boulder and pebble hoping to find this high.  Frustration sets in and the whisper arrives.   Was that really worth all the work?  It’s not worth the bother.  If you can’t sustain this high, will any good really come?  You are just doing this for selfish reasons.  Maybe the hope you felt was just the rose color glasses you fashioned.  Seriously, nothing can be ‘that good’.

Awkwardly comforting since these voices have been around since our creation.  We submit.

Yet, what if these whispers were not the voice that we should be entertaining?  What if we may be the cause of God’s silence?

Romans 8: 6-7 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.

We are to permit the spirit to do it’s job.  When our thoughts are sprinkled with condemnation and grounded in worldly views, sure sign they are brought on by our fleshly existence.   A spirit filled life is…

Galatians 5: 22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Imagine a life filled with a sense of compete joy.  No rules or easy ‘How to Books’ to manifest such a life.  Just God.

Our loving Lord wants to wrap us in this state everyday.  He wants to cheer us on to do amazing and miraculous things in His name.  No feat too small, no mountain-top unattainable.

Romans 8:  9-13

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

How do we tap into this spirit and put a tight lid on the whispers? In the passage above we read that the spirit lives in us already, there for the taking.  No batteries required. In a way, the whisper is external and slips through from our earthly world.  It sneaks in undetected and disguised as ‘fruit’.

Through constant prayer, praise, and reading His word we are able to keep the spirit running on all cylinders.  Some days it will purr and soar and other days it will slowly sail.  But in all of this, God holds us tightly.

Romans 8: 14 – 17

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
